What are Closed-End Funds?
A closed-end fund is a type of investment fund that pools money from investors and uses it to invest in a diversified portfolio of securities, such as stocks, bonds, or other assets.
Key Features
Fixed Number of Shares
Closed-end funds issue a fixed number of shares during an initial public offering (IPO), with no new shares created or issued thereafter.
Premiums & Discounts
Supply and demand means share price can differ from the net asset value (NAV) of the fund, with a higher price being a premium and a lower price a discount.
Active Management
CEFs are typically actively managed through tactical trading with the goal of outperforming a particular benchmark and generating alpha.
Exchange Traded
CEFs are traded on stock exchanges throughout the trading day with prices determined by supply and demand of the secondary markets.
Use of Leverage
Some closed-end funds use leverage to enhance returns and allow stakeholders to invest in more assets than would otherwise be possible with the initial capital raised.
Regular Distributions
Closed-end funds commonly distribute dividends and capital gains to investors and shareholders on a regular, ongoing basis.
Why Closed-End Funds?
Access & Amplification
Ability to invest in less liquid corners of the market and grow existing strategies without forced buying or selling.
Permanence of Capital
Allows you to stay more fully invested with less concern about fund flows and performance chasing.
Total Return Potential
The capacity to strategically utilize leverage can potentially enhance both income and returns.
